Business Industry Statistics

According to the US Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, 99.9% of all businesses in the US are small businesses, which they define as an independent business having fewer than 500 employees.* Our research supports this trend too, as all Catholic employers we surveyed said their business had fifty or fewer employees, and 77.8% said they had ten or fewer employers in their business. Small businesses have created 62.7% of all new jobs added to the economy since 1995, which shows that they are a major force in keeping our economy strong.**

Of the Catholic business leaders we surveyed, 87.5% said the Catholic faith is very or extremely important to their organization. The same number said it is very or extremely important to hire employees who support the Catholic mission of their organization. However, only 50% of employers said it was very or extremely clear to job applicants that their organization is Catholic in nature. Catholic Gigs is committed to helping all businesses market themselves successfully to attract qualified and faith-filled applicants who will uphold the values of the employers and their organizations.

Most businesses we surveyed advertise job openings using online job search engines (71.4%) and referrals from friends or colleagues (71.4%). Many organizations also use their own company website (57.1%), so knowing the organizations that uphold catholic social teaching can be valuable information for job seekers. That’s where Catholic Gigs can help job seekers – we have a large and growing directory of organizations who are committed to upholding Christian values within the workplace, and are interested in connecting with qualified applicants who want their faith to be welcomed at work.

In today’s world, businesses of all sizes need a strong digital presence. Of the for-profit business employers we surveyed, nearly three-quarters (71.4%) said they would be hiring for digital marketing positions in the next 12-24 months. More than half of employers (57.1%) are looking for candidates who have experience with various social media platforms. Many are also hiring for entry-level positions (57.1%) and administrative and clerical positions (28.6%), providing ample opportunity for new graduates and those just entering the business world to find positions at organizations that respect and support their faith.

Many organizations are hiring not only for entry-level positions, but upper management positions as well. Nearly half (42.9%) of the hiring managers we surveyed said that they would be hiring for mid-level management or senior-level executive positions within the next 12-24 months, yet they also said that these positions can be the most difficult to fill. If you are at an organization that is facing difficulties finding the right match for your upper management positions, values-based hiring techniques may help lead you to the right fit. We have a large database of qualified candidates, and we can help you find the perfect person for your open positions. Likewise, if you are an experienced Catholic professional ready to take on new challenges or looking for a new opportunity in a faith-filled environment, check out our job board for opportunities across many industries and fields. We at Catholic Gigs believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to advance their career, regardless of their age or experience.

The internet has revolutionized how people do business by creating an atmosphere that fosters independence and the entrepreneurial spirit. Out of the Catholic business leaders we surveyed, 71.4%  said that they don’t require employees to have a college degree, and 42.9% said they would actively seek out someone who had previously worked as a freelancer or started their own business. These leaders recognize the shifting landscape in both education and employment, and understand that individuals with non-traditional paths can bring great value to an organization with their unique experiences.

For college students or others preparing for a future career in business, it can be important to follow the right path of education and take courses that will be beneficial to future employers. Unsurprisingly, more than half (57.1%) of business leaders surveyed say they are interested in hiring candidates who have taken courses in business management and leadership – but they don’t stop there. The same respondents said they also value job candidates who have taken courses in philosophy and theology, as well as art, design, and other creative disciplines. Businesses value people who have a broad education across many subjects because they are better able to think critically, solve problems creatively, and adapt to change.

When it comes to technical experience with specific software or tools, certain skills are essential to all industries. Nearly all business employers (85.7%) expect job candidates to be comfortable using the Google suite of programs. About three-quarters (71.4%) value candidates who have experience with project management software such as Trello, Asana, or Basecamp, to name a few. The same number of employers (71.4%) expect job applicants to be comfortable using video conferencing tools such as Zoom or Skype. This rise of video conferencing tools has been fueled by the shift to remote work, as businesses of all sizes need a way to communicate and collaborate with employees who are not in the same physical location.
