Healthcare Industry Statistics
Catholic healthcare plays a significant role in the United States, providing care to millions of people each year. According to the 2021 American Hospital Association annual survey, more than 1 in 7 patients are cared for in Catholic hospitals each year*. The Catholic Health Association asserts that Catholic health systems operate over 1,600 long-term care and other health facilities in all 50 states, and employ more than 700,000 people in these facilities*. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that there will be about 1.8 million job openings in the general healthcare field in the next ten years, which is a much higher pace of growth than any other occupation.** This opens up a huge opportunity for Catholics who want to provide quality care and make a difference in the world.
In addition to providing excellent medical care, Catholics may choose to work in a faith-based medical facility for a variety of reasons. Here are a few:
- To serve others in need: Healthcare professionals play a vital role in caring for the sick and injured, providing them with the medical attention they need to heal and recover. As a Catholic, you may be drawn to this profession as a way to put your faith into action by serving others in their time of need.
- To make a difference in the world: Healthcare professionals have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of their patients. They can help people feel better, improve their quality of life, and even save their lives. As a Catholic, you may find this work to be deeply fulfilling and meaningful.
- To uphold the Catholic Church’s teachings on the sanctity of life: The Catholic Church teaches that all human life is sacred and should be protected. Healthcare professionals can play a role in upholding this teaching by providing compassionate care to all patients, regardless of their background or circumstances.
- To work in a field that is consistent with Catholic values: The field of healthcare is generally aligned with Catholic values such as compassion, respect for human dignity, and the promotion of the common good. As a Catholic, you may find this work to be a natural extension of your faith.
- To be part of a supportive and caring community: The field of healthcare is often described as a “calling” because it attracts people who are passionate about helping others. As a Catholic healthcare professional, you will have the opportunity to work alongside other like-minded individuals who share your values and commitment to serving others.
In addition to these general reasons, there are also many specific healthcare professions that are particularly well-suited for Catholics. For example, Catholics may be drawn to careers in nursing, social work, chaplaincy, or counseling. These professions allow Catholics to use their faith and skills to provide direct care to patients and their families.
