Education Industry Statistics

The Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that as of May 2022, more than 8.3 million people work in elementary and secondary schools*, and more than 3 million in colleges, universities, and  professional schools**.

According to the National Catholic Education Association, US Catholic schools employ more than 150,000 people full-time for the current school year, with the vast majority of those (97.4%) being lay men and women.*** Whether you are looking to enter the world of Catholic education, or want to expand your team of dedicated Catholic educators, we have the connections you are seeking.

According to our own survey of Catholics who work in education, 87.5% say that the Catholic faith is very or extremely important to the mission of their organization, and 100% say it is very or extremely important to hire employees who will support the Catholic identity of their school.

If you’re looking for a job in Catholic education, employers in our survey said they usually advertise job openings using job search engines (80%), referrals from friends or colleagues (80%), and their company website (60%). Eighty percent of employers surveyed also say they will be hiring for education positions within the next 12-24 months. Employers often face difficulties hiring reliable full-time teachers, as well as counseling and aide positions. We here at Catholic Gigs are committed to connecting qualified job seekers with excellent opportunities in Catholic education, and helping employers find the perfect fit for every open position they have.

Catholics in the education field say that the most important factors they consider when hiring include a candidate’s willingness to support the Catholic identity of the organization, their personal values, and work ethic. Much less important to hiring managers are education level, skill level, and previous work experience – only 40% of employers said their organization requires employees to have a college degree – so working in education can be an excellent place for faithful Catholics with limited experience to find entry-level positions that suit both their faith and occupation needs.

Naturally, some positions in the Catholic education field will require more education and training. For those studying and working towards a future job in Catholic education, employers say they especially seek out candidates who have taken courses in Liberal Arts, Theology, and Stem. Certain positions also require specialized education in childcare or early child development and education, or specific curriculums like Catechesis of the Good Shepherd or the Montessori Method. Employers also generally expect job applicants to be comfortable using the Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite of programs.
