Job Title: Summer Lifeguard & Mentor Position
Location: CatholicTech, Castel Gandolfo, Italy - On Campus
Duration: 1 month minimum, or up to 3 months (90 Days)
Stipend/Compensation: Full room and board provided on campus, plus $500 monthly stipend
Start Date: July 1st - August 5th (or up to 3 months)
CatholicTech is seeking an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard with 1+ years experience to support the college’s summer program for high schoolers studying STEM majors. You will work closely with the Program facilitators to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the students during pool hours and visits to the local Lake Albano. Additionally, this internship offers exposure to a wide range of counselor functions, including mentoring students, chaperoning excursions locally and in Rome, communicating rules and logistics, overseeing recreational activities on campus, and problem-solving. You will gain skills in leadership, communication, time management, adaptability, professionalism, creativity, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lifeguarding and general Pool Safety
- Lifeguarding during designated pool hours.
- Lifeguarding on swimming outings to the local Lake Albano in town.
- Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergencies, providing assistance to those in distress and performing water rescues or administering first aid and CPR as needed.
- First Aid and CPR: Be proficient in administering first aid and CPR, and have a current certification in both.
- Understand and practice an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in case of emergency.
- Monitoring and Safety: Actively monitor the pool area for potential hazards or unsafe activities, and ensure all swimmers adhere to safety rules and regulations.
- Enforcement of Rules:Enforce pool rules and regulations, and warn students of any improper activities or dangers.
- Assist with pool cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep, including safety equipment.
- Student Wellbeing
- Campus supervision: Oversee daily activities including class, Mass, meals, and recreation time. Enforce conduct policies and curfew restrictions to uphold the safety and wellbeing of students.
- Emotional Care: Support students facing emotional hardships such as homesickness or anxiety.
- Conflict Resolution: Actively listen to potential questions or concerns and mediate potential conflicts between students gracefully.
- Safety
- Taking Inventory: Account for each student daily to verify student status and ensure that class attendance is maintained.
- Emergency Readiness: Understand the existing protocols to anticipate any potential medical or public-safety emergencies.
- Collaboration: Maintain clear and frequent communication with other counselors and program leaders to ensure smooth program operations.
- Academics
- Optimize Organization: Assist students with organization and time management.
- Academic Advocate: Communicate with professors to assist in student academic success when necessary.
- Resource Navigator: Collaborate with supervisors to fulfill the academic needs of students.
- Recreation
- Lead Excursions: Plan and lead local outings and excursions in Rome. This may include leading hikes, organizing meals at local restaurants, and creating itineraries for religious activities in Rome.
- Coordinate events: Organizing community-building events such as sports activities, talent shows, movie nights, and interactive games.
Qualifications:
- Lifeguard certification: Applicant is required to hold a current lifeguard certification, such as from the American Red Cross or a similar organization as well as current CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Swimming Ability: Excellent swimming skills and the ability to perform various rescue techniques.
- 1+ years of experience as a lifeguard.
- Must be at least 20 years old.
- Currently enrolled or a recent graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject.
- Experience working with teens: This could be as a WSI, camp counselor, tutor, RA, mentor, or volunteer.
- Leadership skills: Ability to manage groups, lead activities, and serve as a role model.
- Communication skills: Professionalism, empathy, and active listening.
- Event or activity planning: Experience organizing group events, excursions, or team-building activities is a big plus.
- Willing to take a Background check and undergo Safe Environment training during orientation.
- Possess a valid Passport and travel documents
- Willingness to uphold and respect the mission and values of a Catholic educational institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A current nursing student or EMT certification would be preferred, but is not required.
- Travel Experience: Familiarity with travel logistics and willingness to learn basic Italian phrases necessary for interacting with local Italians.
