THE CRISIS

The Challenges We Face

Challenges

Today’s work landscape leaves many feeling lost and undervalued

Economic Insecurity & Disposability

Mass layoffs despite record profits, wage stagnation amid inflation, and the shift to contract work without benefits or stability. The social contract between employers and employees has eroded, with loyalty flowing only upward.

Purpose & Identity Crisis

As automation accelerates, workers question their fundamental value. The blurring lines between human and machine capabilities create existential uncertainty about what skills matter and where humans fit in tomorrow’s economy.

Algorithmic Dehumanization

From AI-screened resumes to performance algorithms, technology increasingly mediates every aspect of work life. Human potential gets reduced to data points, while nuanced judgment and context disappear from crucial career decisions.

THE QUESTION

Why Do We Work?

In a world questioning the value of human labor, Catholic Social Teaching provides timeless wisdom to answer the question, “What is the meaning of work?”

Human Dignity
“[Work] is not only good in the sense that it is useful or something to enjoy; it is also good as being something worthy, that is to say, something that corresponds to man’s dignity, that expresses this dignity and increases it.” (Laborem Exercens, §9, 1981, Pope John Paul II – Vatican)

Service to God & Neighbor
“By his labor a man ordinarily supports himself and his family, is joined to his fellow men and serves them, and can exercise genuine charity and be a partner in the work of bringing divine creation to perfection.” (Gaudium et Spes, §67, 1965, Vatican II – Pope Paul VI)

Stewardship & Creativity
“Through work man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his own needs, but he also achieves fulfilment as a human being and indeed, in a sense, becomes “more a human being”. (Laborem Exercens, §16, 1981, Pope John Paul II – Vatican)

Ultimately, the common good depends on man working, transforming himself, and serving God. Without it, the fundamental order of society fails.

Why

THE SOLUTION

Human Skillsets

These are not skills that only humans can do, many can now be replicated or imitated by machines. But they are skills that humans must do, because they form us, connect us, and uphold the common good and the dignity of work.

Technology can support these tasks, but when it replaces the human presence entirely, it undermines the common good and the deeper purpose of labor.
