Our Major Gifts Officer will secure funds by fulfilling the interests and passions of donors by providing them with giving opportunities, encouraging them to give, and ensuring that as many as possible are retained as donors while upgrading their giving to and involvement with the Congregation. This position assists in educating potential and existing donors on the role of the Congregation in the Church; promoting knowledge of the charism of the Holy Cross family and; providing an accounting of the impact of philanthropic dollars on Holy Cross and the beneficiaries of its fundraising efforts.

Essential Functions

  • Through data analysis and research, qualify a portfolio of donors from a large geographic area that includes the west coast of the United States.
  • Create individual goals for each donor based upon the donor’s history of giving and the Congregation’s knowledge of that donor’s history and potential.
  • Create a plan for each donor that serves as a foundation for building the relationship through correspondence, phone conversations and personal visits to enhance each donor’s annual, campaign, and planned giving.
  • Collaborate with co-workers to secure appropriate information necessary to create proposals and asks that will be used with donors in portfolio to secure gifts and pledges and report to each donor on how their giving is making an impact.
  • Perform other major donor activities, including timely acknowledgment of gifts and pledges, creating timely call reports, documenting key “moves” in the development database, submitting monthly reports, and attending major gift and other appropriate strategy meetings.
  • Work within the Planned Giving Program to identify potential opportunities and to maintain relationships with those who have already made such a commitment to the Province.

Ideal Candidate Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred and 3-5 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Knowledge of the Catholic faith and practices, and Holy Cross’s unique role and history in the Church is preferred.
  • This position requires a thorough understanding of charitable giving, including major gifts, fund development, planned giving vehicles such as bequests and charitable gift annuities and foundation grant making.
  • This position requires strong leadership skills, and the ability to demonstrate a high degree of initiative, self-direction, and creativity.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to foster collaborative relationships and to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Must have experience in financial management practices, including budgeting and fundraising analysis. This position requires outstanding oral, written, telephone and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to abide by strict legal and professional confidentiality is critical.
  • Requires a valid Driver’s License and use of the employee’s personal vehicle to perform routine job functions.
  • Requires the ability to travel nationally, and possibly internationally, with a target of being on the road visiting donors 50% of the time.
