Overnight Campus Safety Officer

The Campus Safety Officer serves the university community as a visible uniformed representative of the department, welcomes members of the community and visitors to the department, and performs rounds on foot and by vehicle in order to build rapport, respond to questions and concerns, secure buildings and property, assist with special events and activities, monitor safety and security concerns, and enforce university policies. The appointee will be required to work overnight, Monday through Friday with the occasional weekend.

Other Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

• Assists with parking and traffic programs

• Assists with safety education and emergency preparedness training

• Assists with safety and traffic control for events

• Responds to emergencies and crisis situations as needed

• Documents incidents and departmental activities

• Assists with training student employees, interns & contracted staff

• Provides safety escorts as needed

• Maintains current certifications and training

• Other duties as assigned

Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience include:

• Supports the implementation of the Student Development Strategic Plan “Made for Encounter”

• High School diploma required

• Associate degree or above in safety/security, criminal justice, education, behavioral sciences, or a closely related field is preferred

• Minimum two years of professional experience in public safety, safety education, law enforcement, or private security. An associate degree in safety/security or criminal justice may be substituted for the experience requirement

• Upholds and supports the Christian, Catholic, Benedictine mission of the University of Mary

• Supports the ongoing implementation of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the apostolic constitution on Catholic colleges and universities.

• Builds a culture of ready and earnest hospitality in the Office of Student Development and throughout the university, in accord with Saint Benedict’s admonition that all be received as Christ.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Knowledge of campus safety and security services and policies.

• Ability to relate well with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

• Ability to effectively assess, evaluate and manage various emergency/crisis situations

• Ability to help develop and present effective safety education and training programs.

• Ability to teach, instruct and make effective public presentations using electronic technology.

• Professional demeanor and discretion and the ability to effectively train, lead and direct effectively.

• First aid/CPR certified.

• Must maintain a level of fitness necessary to walk long distances, run, climb stairs, bend, jump and lift up to 50 pounds in order to respond to emergency situations.

• Must possess a driver’s license
